It has recently come to our attention that the fourth season of Instant Star, produced by Epitome Pictures will be the final season on the individual channel MTV Inc. has created for The N.
This is a confusing decision for fans, as we have seen the proposed lineup for this new channel. The N, as shown on Noggin provided an outlet for teenage viewers who were growing into adolescence, but not quite yet settled into the emerging adulthood state of their life. It gave them shows that they could call their generation’s own. The only original programming specific to The N's new channel is Degrassi, and Instant Star. The rest of the programmed shows are in syndication either from another affiliated channel, or programs that were iconic for a previous generation. A generation that is no longer the demographic you seek to capture.
We as a generation do enjoy seeing these shows on occasion, but fail to understand how an entire channel can revolve around them. We crave fresh ideas that are created and designed for us. We desire the original and edgy programming that a previous generation received with the creation of Caitlin’s Way, Fresh Prince, and Clueless.
Instant Star was the marriage of reality show like qualities, and most young adult’s dreams- to be a rock star. The idea behind the concept of the show, to create a rock star out of an every day girl provided a role model for young adults while showing their flaws and hardships. It was a program that captured the realism of every day life, love, and hurt, but put her in a world that most teenagers do not get to see on a daily basis- the music industry. Beyond the show, the production of a soundtrack from the original songs was ground-breaking. We feel as though this show has not been given the proper consideration in keeping with the idea of fresh, and innovative programming.
A large portion of the demographic that watched Instant Star was the teenage girl and now the programs geared to this person are slowly being taken away, and replaced with something that has already been shown to be effective. We desire that you, as a network take a chance on unique and original programming. Shows such as Instant Star and Degrassi make your network known. These shows explore and reflect what truly happens in life now for these individuals in a current setting, which has changed dramatically from the early and even late 1990's.
We as a generation, and as a body of fans request that you please reevaluate casting aside one of the few programs that we have been able to call our own, in a time of TV and Media saturated in reality television.
